Oscar Smith Mitchell
Mitchell, the son of John and Esther Mitchell of Hull Village, was the first Hull soldier who lost his life in the service of his country during World War I. Mitchell was a member of the 61st Infantry Machine Gun Company, 5th Division. Mitchell had volunteered to go on outpost duty while in the front lines at Mayenmontier. Shortly afterwards a German sniper located the position. When morning dawned, the American soldier was found shot through the heart. The attendance was the largest at a funeral in this town in many years. Town officials and the entire community of Hull Village. Together with many Summer residents attended the honors to Hull's Hero!

Veterans Food Drive

WATD Studios, 130 Enterprise Drive, Marshfield, MA On the second Thursday of every month at WATD studios in Marshfield from 10:00 AM until about a little after 12 there is the Veterans Drive Thru. Volunteers, mostly Veterans themselves, arrive around 10:00 AM to unload the food and setup the tables to build the bags to be given out that day. No matter what the weather is the Food Drive Thru happens. Once all the food is out of the trailer. The volunteers grab a bag or a box and get in the line to start filling it. Other volunteers stand behind the tables to restock as things run out. The process continues until there is nothing left. Once the food is all bagged or boxed up, we break the tables down and some volunteers leave. Then its time. The first couple cars come in. They are greeted by a friendly Veteran and asked how any families they are picking up for. They are asked where they would like to have groceries put. In trunk or back seat. That's first stop. Second Stop. They are waved ahead where they receive fruit, bread, canned goods, pasta, and other items. Sometimes we even have pet food. No one is turned away until all the bags or boxes are gone. Once everything is gone, we pack it up and we are off until next month. August 10th is the next event.
BEING A VETERAN AND SEEING HOW WELL THE VETERANS FOOD DRIVE ALL COMES TOGETHER EVERY MONTH IS AMAZING. THE FRIENDSHIPS AND THE COMRADERY AMONGST EVERYONE INVOLVED IS FAMILY LIKE. THERE IS ALWAYS A STORY TO BE HEARD OR A GOOD JOKE TO BE TOLD. IT'S A SPECIAL TIME FOR SOME OF US. A PLACE WHERE WE LAUGH, AND WE SMILE. BUT ANYTIME ONE OF US GO. IT'S WITH A HUG AND A HANDSHAKE.
